Josh Hart

Consensus #90 · SG34 · tier 6Week 3: 3 gamesUpdated Oct 26

Hart is a starting wing for the defending champion Knicks who fills the box score with rebounds, assists and defense, and his preseason ankle soreness cleared in time for the opener.

Role

Hart started the Oct. 20 opener against Philadelphia, per a Yahoo Sports report of the lineup announced by coach Mike Brown. The other starters were Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby and Karl-Anthony Towns. NBA.com's player page shows he played 30 minutes in the 106-100 loss, with 14 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal and 1 block. Mohamed Diawara started in his place in the preseason finale, and Brown said that was so Diawara could guard Kawhi Leonard and Scottie Barnes. I found no minutes trackers, no back-to-back rest plan and no usage-rate figures. I also have no current report on who competes with him for the work beyond Diawara.

The case for

Heavy.com describes him as one of the Knicks' most versatile players, with rebounding, perimeter defense and ballhandling next to Brunson. It says he can guard several positions and help New York keep its pace when Brunson rests. He started the opener on a title-defending team, and the ankle problem looks resolved: Brown said everyone practiced fully the day before the opener (Daily News via Yahoo and nyknicksnews.com), and Hart was not on the injury report.

The case against

The main concerns are health and his place in the rotation. The ankle soreness cost him the preseason finale, and he said "We'll see in two days" when asked about the opener (Yahoo Sports). A Yahoo piece also says he dealt with a finger injury all of last season. Brown used Diawara as a starter in the preseason finale, so the starting job could shift depending on matchups. Heavy.com also notes uncertainty about his future in New York, though I did not find details.

Where analysts split

Broad agreement on his role: nothing I found shows analysts split on Hart's minutes or starting spot. The open question is health, specifically whether the right ankle soreness recurs. I also could not tell what the reference to Knicks contract negotiations means for Hart, so I make no claim there.

Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
