Kentavious Caldwell-Pope

Consensus #195 · SG69 · tier 7Week 3: 4 gamesUpdated Oct 26

Caldwell-Pope is a veteran three-and-D wing who comes off the bench when Philadelphia is healthy and starts when a starting guard or wing is out.

Role

The reporting I found says he's a bench shooter at full strength. A Fox Sports/RotoWire blurb (about 20 October) says he'll get spot starts when other vets rest, and the Oct 8 preseason note has him bench-bound once the regular five is available. That five is Maxey, Edgecombe, Brown, James and Embiid. Sunday against the Pistons was his first start of the season, per NBC Sports (Oct 25). VJ Edgecombe was out with an abdominal injury, and Dean Wade and James also moved into the lineup for that game. Through three appearances, the same blurb has him at 26.3 minutes per game, 8.3 points and 53.8 percent from three. I found no published usage rate. Anfernee Simons was named alongside him as a candidate for extra minutes while Edgecombe is out. Edgecombe's status beyond Sunday has not been confirmed in what I read. Caldwell-Pope left Sunday's game briefly with an apparent right wrist issue and returned (ESPN, Tony Jones of The Athletic). I found no later update on the wrist.

The case for

Maxey called him "fantastic" in camp. Coverage points to his championship experience and defense as a way into a regular rotation role. While Edgecombe is out he has a starting job and a bigger share of the minutes, and he has been shooting well from three early.

The case against

When the team is at full strength he's a reserve behind a starting five of Maxey, Edgecombe, Brown, James and Embiid, so his minutes and scoring depend on other players being absent. He is 33. The 76ers also have younger wings competing for time, such as Justin Edwards, and Simons is another candidate for the minutes Edgecombe leaves open. A wrist issue appeared Sunday, though he came back into the game.

Where analysts split

The open question is how much he plays once Edgecombe is back and the roster is healthy. Coverage says bench shooter with occasional starts. Other coverage says his defense and experience could earn a regular rotation role. I found no analyst piece that settles it, so this is my reading of two separate blurbs rather than a reported debate.
