Meleek Thomas
Thomas is a rookie second-round guard who has moved into Cleveland's backup guard minutes after missing the first two games, with about 20 minutes a night and perimeter scoring as his value.
Role
He is a bench guard, not a starter. RotoWire's tally through three appearances is 13.0 points, 2.3 threes and 20.8 minutes per game (CBS Sports, Nov 1). He played 23 minutes in Saturday's 136-111 win at Milwaukee after sitting out the Atlanta back-to-back with a foot injury, so the probable tag in the wire note was resolved by him playing. Beat coverage says he is averaging about 20 minutes (KingJamesGospel, Nov 1). Craig Porter Jr. fell out of the rotation after two games as the backup point guard, and Tyrese Proctor is now in it. RotoWire expected Sam Merrill and Mario Hezonja to absorb his minutes while he was out. Jaylon Tyson was out with an ankle sprain around the Bucks game, which may be helping Thomas' minutes. No usage rate or starting lineup change has been reported.
He can create his own shot, which few Cavaliers can. He led Summer League in scoring at 27.3 points per game over four games and scored 16 in 19 minutes in his debut, going 4-of-5 on threes. Coach Kenny Atkinson has said the team needs another ball-handler to support Donovan Mitchell and James Harden. He has played 20 or more minutes in three straight appearances.
He did not play in the first two games, and he was left out of the initial rotation on Oct 23 by coach's decision. He is still a second-round rookie in a deep guard group that includes Proctor, Porter, Merrill and Hezonja. The Bucks game was his first back from a foot injury, and his shooting there was 5-of-12. Part of his current minutes may come from Tyson's absence, and if Tyson returns, those minutes could shrink. The coach has changed this rotation quickly before.
Where analysts split
The open question is whether the 20 minutes are a durable rotation spot or a product of early-season shuffling and Tyson's injury. Preseason commentary argued he deserved only a short burst of five to seven minutes. Since then he has played well beyond that. I found no analyst arguing he will lose the role, so this is an open question rather than a clear split.
