Moritz Wagner

Consensus #172 · C45 · tier 7Week 3: 4 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Wagner is a Brooklyn backup big whose minutes have grown over the first five games, and he is shooting far above his career norm from three, so the open question is whether the role holds.

Role

Backup center behind Day'Ron Sharpe. CBS/RotoWire (published within the past day) has him averaging 17.8 minutes, 11.4 points and 3.8 rebounds over his first five regular-season games, with 58.3 percent from three. He went 16 points, 8 rebounds in 23 minutes against the Pistons on Friday. NBC Sports/Rotoworld says his minutes have risen over recent games as he gets comfortable in the system, and that his role would need an injury to grow. He started in preseason when Sharpe was out with a shoulder issue, then went back to the bench once Sharpe returned. I did not find a published starting five or minutes tracker, and I did not find a back-to-back rest plan.

The case for

He has gone from a sporadic role in Orlando to a real second-unit job. He has scored in double figures three games in a row, and CBS says his minutes have been trending up. He was productive in preseason whenever he got extended run (15 points in 22 minutes against Miami, 15 points in 22 against Boston). If his minutes keep rising into the low 20s, he gets more shots and rebounds in a Nets team that is still looking for its first wins.

The case against

His shooting looks unsustainable: a 58.3 percent three-point rate over five games is far above what a backup big usually sustains. CBS notes he played only 66 regular-season games across the prior two seasons because of an ACL tear, and averaged just 11.9 minutes last season. Fox Sports projected mid-teens minutes if Sharpe plays about 27 a night, and said Wagner would need injuries to matter in deeper formats. Rotoworld likewise says his role is capped without an injury.

Where analysts split

Whether Wagner's recent 17 to 23 minutes are the new baseline or a hot stretch that settles back toward the mid-teens. Fox's preseason projection was mid-teens minutes behind Sharpe. CBS/RotoWire and Rotoworld describe his minutes as rising, though Rotoworld also says his role would only grow if someone is injured.
