Moussa Diabaté

Consensus #49 · C14 · tier 6Week 3: 3 gamesUpdated Oct 26

Diabaté is Charlotte's preseason starting center and played big minutes in the opener, but he has only two regular-season games, so his hold on the job is still unproven.

Role

He started preseason at center ahead of Ryan Kalkbrenner and Hannes Steinbach (RotoWire, Oct 7). In the opener against Brooklyn he played 34 minutes, and Kalkbrenner played 13:58 behind him (Mogaz, citing the game). Against Atlanta he played 21 minutes in a 128-81 blowout loss, which CBS/RotoWire attributes largely to the score. His season line through two games is 27.5 minutes and 11.0 points per game (CBS). I have not read a regular-season starting-lineup page, so his starting status in games is not confirmed beyond the preseason report. Fox Sports said it appears likely Naz Reid starts at power forward, with Diabaté, Steinbach and Kalkbrenner competing for center minutes. His usage on offense is modest. No injury designation. RotoWire noted a right elbow injury before opening night, then reported him good to go.

The case for

He won the starting center job over Kalkbrenner and Steinbach, and he played 34 minutes in the opener with 17 points, eight rebounds, three assists and five steals. He has a track record of heavy minutes when Kalkbrenner is out. Last season he started 47 of 73 games and averaged 8.7 rebounds in 26.0 minutes. He also won the NBA Hustle Award. Coach Charles Lee has stressed deflections and diving on the floor, which fits how Diabaté plays. Fox says he can be a double-double threat if he gets enough playing time.

The case against

The frontcourt is crowded. Charlotte added Naz Reid and Steinbach, and Kalkbrenner is improving, which Fox says may make Diabaté's minutes less secure. His offense is limited (CBS: limited involvement makes consistent minutes important), and his 69.2 field goal percentage over two games is a small sample unlikely to hold. Fox also said his steals and blocks need to stabilize if he wants to keep the starting role. The Mogaz piece notes the team was outscored when Kalkbrenner played, but also that plus-minus did not fully favor Diabaté in the opener.

Where analysts split

Whether Diabaté holds the starting center job and 30-plus minutes once Kalkbrenner, Steinbach and Reid settle into the rotation, or whether the opener's 34 minutes was an outlier. The 21-minute blowout game does not settle it.
