Robert Williams III

Consensus #125 · C33 · tier 7Week 3: 4 gamesUpdated Oct 26

Robert Williams III is Portland's backup center behind Donovan Clingan, a short-minute rim protector and rebounder whose usefulness depends on staying healthy and on a managed workload.

Role

Rotowire (via CBS Sports, Oct 17) has him competing with Micah Potter and Yang Hansen for minutes behind Donovan Clingan. Rotowire projects steady minutes if he is healthy. I found no 2026-27 regular-season minutes or usage figures. Last season's reporting (SI, Blazer's Edge) had him at 17.1 minutes a game, with rest on the second night of back-to-backs built into a medical program. In the Oct 7 preseason game he played 14 minutes off the bench, and he sat out an Oct 17 preseason game for rest. He is expected to play the opener against Phoenix. A note on our data: our card shows 2 GP and 66 MIN for last season, while the reporting describes a 59-game season, so treat that card line cautiously.

The case for

Portland re-signed him to a three-year, $44 million extension through 2028-29, which signals a defined role. Last season he shot 70.8% and blocked shots at a top-15 rate in the league (SI, Blazer's Edge). He also had the best on-off numbers of any Blazer in the consistent postseason rotation (SI). He had five blocks in 14 preseason minutes against Golden State. Rotowire has noted that he gets 20 or more minutes when Clingan is out.

The case against

His minutes are capped and his health is fragile. He missed time with knee problems last season, and the Blazers manage his rest, including back-to-backs. When he is out, Sidy Cissoko has absorbed bench minutes. Yang Hansen, a 2025 first-round pick, and Micah Potter are competing for the same backup work. Last season's Blazer's Edge coverage described smaller lineups squeezing his role.

Where analysts split

The open question is whether he holds a stable backup-center workload over 82 games or is squeezed by rest management and by Hansen and Potter. I found no analyst arguing either side this season. The preseason reporting I found leans toward him being the backup.

Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
