Stephon Castle

Consensus #103 · SG40 · tier 6Week 3: 4 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Castle is a full-time starter in San Antonio's three-guard lineup. He is a high-minute playmaker and rebounder whose shooting has been inefficient through six games, and his migraine looks resolved.

Role

He has started all six games, per Lineups.com (its page was indexed earlier, so I am relying on its recent-game listings). He starts alongside De'Aaron Fox, Dylan Harper, Devin Vassell and Victor Wembanyama, the same five in the Oct. 31 game against Minnesota. ESPN's splits show 29.5 minutes per game over six games. Individual games have ranged from 22 minutes (Oct. 31, migraine) to 38 (Oct. 28 at Utah, overtime). Fox, Harper and Vassell compete with him for ball-handling and shots. A Fox Sports item reported that Julian Champagnie and Keldon Johnson were the likely replacements if Castle was out. He sat one preseason game for rest, but I found nothing on regular-season rest plans or back-to-back sitting.

The case for

He fills the box score as scorer, passer, rebounder and defender. ESPN shows 14.5 points, 5.7 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 1.3 steals per game. His three-point volume is up, at 7.2 attempts per game on 34.9% per Lineups.com. He has a clear starting job, and Rotowire/NYT reporting called him locked in at shooting guard. The lineup lost the opener to OKC but has won since, and Yahoo ran a piece arguing the three-guard group actually dominated that game. Basketball-Reference's per-36 line shows more rebounds and assists than his first two seasons.

The case against

Efficiency is down, with 40.2% from the field per ESPN. He has put up five more field goal attempts than makes in several games, and he shot 0-for-4 with three turnovers and four fouls in the Oct. 31 game. Foul and turnover rates are also high, at 3.3 fouls and 2.7 turnovers per game. A Fox Sports item argues his ball-handling role has to shrink for Harper to take a leap, which would cap his playmaking. Wembanyama's shot volume is also large, including 34 shots in one game per ESPN. With four other high-usage starters, he could lose touches.

Where analysts split

The open question is how much of the ball-handling Castle keeps as Harper grows. A Fox Sports piece says his creator role should shrink so Harper can take a leap, while his current starting minutes and assist totals argue he stays a primary playmaker. I found no analyst argument that he loses his starting spot.
