Steven Adams
Adams is a 33-year-old backup center who has barely played this season because of a right soleus strain, and his availability is the main question right now.
Role
He is a reserve behind starter Alperen Sengun, and Clint Capela is the backup who benefits while Adams is out. Adams played only eight minutes in his season debut, a win over the Spurs on Friday, and no minutes figure beyond that is reported. Houston also planned to sit him for one leg of early back-to-backs (RotoBaller, citing the Houston Chronicle, Oct 23). He missed the opener on Wednesday, played Friday, sat Saturday, and is out Monday against the Hawks. ESPN's injury page (Oct 26 snapshot) shows an estimated return date of Oct 28, which is an estimate and not a club statement. Last season he played 1 game and averaged 9 minutes.
Per Rockets Wire, he remains one of the league's better per-minute centers at offensive rebounding and screen setting. If the strain is minor, he returns to a backup big role with Capela and Jabari Smith also in the frontcourt mix. The calf strain was reported to cost an average of 16 days league-wide in recent years, with wide variance by severity (Rockets Wire citing InStreetClothes).
NBC Sports (Oct 25) called it concerning that he is still dealing with the same strained right soleus that kept him out of the opener. Rockets Wire says he has become less durable in recent seasons. NBC Sports/Rotoworld (Oct 25) wrote that he has little fantasy value at this point in his career. Even when healthy, he is a low-minute backup, and the rest plan for back-to-backs cuts his games further.
Where analysts split
Broad agreement on the role: Adams is a backup, Capela gets the work while he is out, and no analyst I found projects Adams as more than a reserve. The open question is the timeline. Rockets Wire said coach Ime Udoka would give a recovery update at Monday's pregame press conference, and I did not find that update.
Injury: Out: assessed avoid
Right soleus strain, week-to-week
Out with no firm date, coach says a week or two, and he was already a low-minutes reserve behind Sengun before this; Capela absorbs the backup minutes in the interim.
What would change this: Team update on practice participation or official return timeline.
Research confidence: reported. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
