Tre Johnson
Tre Johnson is a second-year scoring guard who is the first guard off Washington's bench early in 2026-27, and his production depends on his shooting.
Role
CBS Sports (about 3 days old) has him coming off the bench in the opener, a 128-116 win over Milwaukee, for 19 minutes. Kyshawn George started in his place and had 18/5/3/1/1. In the Raptors game he scored 20 points (NBC Sports, Oct. 23). Bullets Forever's recap of the Bulls win shows 23 minutes and a 16.8% usage rate. Crafted NBA's depth chart, seen only as a search snippet and not fetched, projects Johnson as George's backup at SG for about 18 minutes. Trae Young, AJ Dybantsa and George appear in the starting group in the reporting I read. AJ Dybantsa has an ankle injury and is ruled out Friday, and CBS says Johnson's role should stay the same without him. The competition for guard minutes includes Bub Carrington and Bilal Coulibaly. I did not find a confirmed full-season minutes split.
NBC Sports calls him a sharpshooter off the bench, and Trae Young creates open threes for him. He made four threes in the Raptors game. Washington was weak at making threes last season, and Johnson's shooting fills that gap. RotoWire says he averaged 16.8 points and 3.3 assists with 39.1 percent from three in the six games where he played 30 or more minutes. Bleacher Report's Greg Swartz named him Washington's top breakout candidate. A starting job could open if injuries hit.
The roster is crowded, and CBS says he has to make the most of second-unit minutes while the team is healthy. Bullets Forever worries that he adds little besides scoring and that this could keep him on the bench. NBC Sports said he did little else against the Raptors besides score. His usage was 16.8% in the Bulls game, which is modest. RotoWire has him in a rotation role mostly off the bench, and its page lists his rookie-year numbers as 12.2 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 24.1 minutes.
Where analysts split
The question is whether he stays a scoring-only bench guard at roughly 18 to 24 minutes or earns a starting spot. Reporting from the preseason (RotoWire) had him competing for the fifth starting spot. The early-season notes show George starting instead, and the analysts have not yet agreed on whether Johnson's all-around game is good enough to move him up.
