Tre Jones
Tre Jones looks like the Bulls' backup point guard and second-unit organizer this season. A hip issue kept him out of a preseason game, and his availability is the open question.
Role
Current reporting calls him the backup point guard behind Josh Giddey. A Yahoo Sports piece from about 12 days before this check quotes coach Tiago Splitter calling him "our backup point guard" who sets the pace for the second unit. RotoWire/CBS also lists him as the projected second-string point guard. Minutes and usage figures have not been reported, and I found no starting-five or minutes-tracker page. Rookie Caleb Wilson has praised playing alongside him. Jones started at times last season, mainly when others were out, but has not been reported as a starter this year. The wire has him out for Friday's preseason game against Memphis with a hip issue. He earlier missed time with an ankle problem and made his first preseason appearance against Denver, playing 10 minutes.
He is the steady, turnover-averse playmaker the staff wants running its young second units. Splitter called his speed key for the bench. Wilson and other youngsters like playing with him. If Giddey or another guard misses time, he has already shown he can step into the starting role. RotoWire's profile says his steady play and assist-to-turnover ratios are real strengths.
RotoWire's profile says his value depends on opportunity, since he lacks the scoring volume, three-point shooting and defensive upside to overcome a limited role. As a reserve behind Giddey his minutes are capped. The ankle problem and now a hip issue have cut into his preseason, and the Bulls plan to experiment with young lineups, which could scramble his bench role.
Where analysts split
Coverage I found is thin on disagreement. The one open question is whether he stays a pure backup behind Giddey or picks up starts and bigger minutes through injuries or lineup experiments. No analyst I found argues either side in detail.
Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
