Walker Kessler

Consensus #30 · C11 · tier 5Week 3: 4 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Kessler is the Lakers' starting center and rim protector, on a four-year, $130 million deal. He has played 30 or more minutes in most games so far, and nothing in current reporting suggests that is changing.

Role

Per hoopsnightly (checked 2 Nov), he averages 30.5 minutes through 6 games with a 17.1% usage rate, so he works as a low-usage finisher and rim protector next to Doncic and Reaves. His Rotowire game logs show 30, 35, 33 and 31 minutes across four of the recent games. The Lakers reportedly added Kevon Looney and Sandro Mamukelashvili as the other centers, per Lakeshowlife about a month ago. Ayton was traded and Hayes left in free agency. I did not find a current depth chart or confirmation of the exact backup split, so I'm not stating who gets the remaining minutes. A finger issue from early camp is the only injury I found, and he was a full participant in Sunday's practice per The Athletic's Law Murray. I found no report on rest plans or back-to-back sitting.

The case for

Optimists point to 26 points on 12-of-12 shooting in his Lakers debut, and 22 points with six blocks and three steals against the Clippers on Oct 24. Through 6 games he averages 14.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.8 blocks on 72.5% shooting (hoopsnightly), and the Lakers are plus 7.8 per game with him on the floor. Lakeshowlife's view is that the Lakers can lean on him for about 30 minutes a night to control the interior, finish lobs and dominate the offensive glass.

The case against

Skeptics point to his health history, since Lakers Nation says he played just five games last season with a torn labrum. He also played only 16 minutes in his preseason debut because of the finger injury. His free-throw shooting is the weak spot at 47.6% (hoopsnightly). Usage is low at 17.1%, so his scoring depends on efficient finishing off Doncic's passing, and the opening 26 points came on perfect shooting that is unlikely to repeat. A fouling or minutes cap is another risk, since one profile asks whether he can protect the paint without foul trouble.

Where analysts split

Broad agreement on his role as starter. The only open question I found is durability and minutes after a lost season, and I found no analyst split on his role.
