Zach LaVine
LaVine is the starting shooting guard and a primary scoring option on a young, thin Kings roster, with the caveat that his role beyond this season is unclear.
Role
He has started the regular-season games I found. Lineups.com and FantasySP list 36.5 minutes and 25.0 points per game over his first two outings (checked today, 2 games). A hottakes.com preview of the Friday Portland game (2 days old) listed Acuff Jr., LaVine, Murray, Hunter and Sabonis as the starters. NBC Sports listed Acuff, LaVine, Hunter, Achiuwa and Sabonis for Sunday against Memphis, with Murray out. The NBC headline for that game says LaVine scored a game-high 37 points. Bleacher Report (2 days old) also has Acuff at point guard. Competition for guard work comes from rookie Acuff Jr. and from Nique Clifford and Malik Monk, who appear behind him on ESPN's depth chart. I did not fetch that page, so I am not reporting its order. I found no minutes cap or rest plan for the regular season. The preseason rest the wire note describes was a one-game absence.
FantasySP describes him as healthy and locked into the starting role, with heavy usage. It expects him to shoulder a lot of offense with Murray out. The Kings' roster is young and thin on scorers, and the Yahoo preview calls LaVine and Acuff a potentially elite offensive guard duo.
Sacramento has said it would like to move him and Sabonis if a taker appeared (Bleacher Report, 2 days old). SI, citing Kings insider James Ham, reported 86 days ago that the club promised him no minutes and no starting job. The hottakes.com preview calls the secondary-shot split among LaVine, Murray and Acuff Jr. a gamble. His health is a concern: our data shows only 3 games and 342 minutes last season, and that preview cites a finger injury as the reason he missed so much time.
Where analysts split
The disagreement is about how long the starting role and heavy workload last. Optimists see a locked-in primary scorer. Skeptics point to a front office that may trade him, a rookie who takes plenty of shots, and a poor health record.
Injury: GTD: assessed minor
Elbow soreness, questionable for Monday
LaVine is questionable with elbow soreness and played reduced minutes Saturday, though it's unclear how much was injury-related versus game context. Worth monitoring for Monday but this is a single-game DTD situation, not an extended absence.
What would change this: Whether he's active in Monday's game vs Dallas and his minutes/role if he plays
Research confidence: reported. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
