Baker Mayfield
Mayfield is the Bucs' established starter, but a dislocated right thumb on his throwing hand has him out with no confirmed return date, and rookie Jalon Daniels is running the offense until he is cleared.
Role
When healthy he is the full-time starter. He had not missed a start with Tampa Bay since 2023, and he signed a three-year, $165 million extension before the season (AP, Sept. 28). Since the injury in Week 3 against Minnesota, undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels has started in his place. Daniels won the backup job in camp (NBC Sports). He started Week 4 at Green Bay, a loss, and Week 5 at Dallas, a 24-16 win. I did not find any snap or target data for Mayfield's supporting cast, and I did not read a current depth chart.
The injury looks structurally minor. The MRI showed no fracture and no ligament or tendon damage, and no surgery or injured reserve stay was expected (ESPN, AP). Coach Todd Bowles said Mayfield now has a smaller splint, and the team would test whether he can grip a ball (Tampa Bay Times' Rick Stroud, via Heavy and Yardbarker). Amazon's James Palmer reported he would push to return for Week 6 against Pittsburgh (Heavy). Optimists also note that his early-season efficiency was poor, so a rested, healthy Mayfield could be a better version of himself. Through three games he had the lowest EPA per dropback among quarterbacks with at least 50 attempts (Next Gen Stats, via NFL.com).
The timeline keeps stretching. Bowles first said a minimum of three weeks. NBC Sports later cited a range of three to six weeks, and one doctor, Brian Sutterer, questioned why a thumb with no ligament damage was costing so much time (Pro Football Network). Bowles said Daniels was the plan against the Steelers. The wire report dated Oct. 12 lists Mayfield as out. Even after he returns, he has to grip and throw with a dislocated thumb on his throwing hand, and the offense and the 1-4 team were struggling before he got hurt.
Where analysts split
The split is about when he returns. Palmer's report that he is pushing for Week 6 and Pelissero's view (via NBC) that Week 6 was the likelier return both conflict with Bowles saying the plan was Daniels against the Steelers. NBC's three-to-six-week range leaves later weeks possible. The open question is whether he can grip and throw the ball well enough to be cleared. Nobody I found disputes that he is the starter once he is healthy.
