Young is Carolina's unquestioned starter at 3-3. Reporting had him in a legitimate breakout season before a three-turnover loss to Tampa Bay, and the Moton injury now puts pressure on his protection.
Role
He is the full-time starter and was pulled only in the fourth quarter of a blowout, with Kenny Pickett finishing the game after the final 10:11 (NBC Sports, Oct 25). His primary targets are Tetairoa McMillan and Jalen Coker, and he has done little rushing: one carry for nine yards on Sunday, and 7 carries for 18 yards in October (ESPN player page). ESPN shows his season totals as 1,712 passing yards, 12 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Brad Idzik is the offensive playcaller, per ESPN's preseason note. I did not find snap-share or target-share tracker data.
NBC Sports called the Tampa game by far his worst of a legitimate breakout campaign, and ESPN shows him at 64.4 QBR for the season. He had protected the ball far better this year (Athlon). A short-week game against Green Bay is projected to be a shootout, and NBC kept him in the low-end QB1 ranks for it. The same NBC note said he and the receivers looked good in an earlier game, with receivers schemed open in space.
He was sacked five times and turned the ball over three times, including a fumble-six, and Bleacher Report graded him a D-. He could get nothing going with Coker or McMillan. Right tackle Taylor Moton fractured his fibula, which leaves the protection thinner. Yahoo's piece warned that another bad game against the Packers would bring noise about whether he is a franchise QB. ESPN's preseason note said QB1 production was a lot to expect, and it viewed him as a fringe QB2.
Where analysts split
The open question is whether the Tampa game was a one-off or a sign that he comes apart under pressure, now that Moton is out. NBC Sports reads it as an outlier within a breakout season. Yahoo and Athlon point to the line and ask if the progress can hold. ESPN's preseason skepticism about QB1 output predates the season and does not address this question.
