Patrick Mahomes
Mahomes is the Chiefs' full-time starter, back from the late-2025 ACL and LCL tear. Analysts split on whether he returns to a top-tier fantasy quarterback or settles in as a borderline QB1.
Role
He is the starter in an offense run by Eric Bieniemy, who returned as offensive coordinator (CBS, SI, Yahoo/PFN preseason pieces). His supporting cast, per those preseason pieces: Kenneth Walker III added in the backfield, Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy and Travis Kelce. I did not read a current depth chart or snap and target report, so I have no snap share or target split. The wire note has him at 23 of 30 for 272 yards, no touchdowns and one interception, plus five rushes for 16 yards, in the 22-6 win over the Chargers.
Bieniemy is back, and CBS notes Mahomes averaged 28.4 fantasy points per game under him from 2018 to 2022. Walker should give the Chiefs a real run game, which would help play-action and lighten Mahomes' load. PFN's Kyle Soppe argued he could return to the top 10 among quarterbacks. CBS says he practiced in full in early camp and looked ready for Week 1, and PFN says the health reports out of Kansas City were positive all summer.
A different PFN outlook says over 25% of his fantasy points came from rushing last season, and that is unlikely to repeat after a major knee injury. CBS also says it is hard to imagine him relying on his legs this season. That PFN piece points out he has not topped 7.1 yards per attempt since 2022 and faces a third straight season under 30 touchdown passes. It also trusts only Rice among the pass catchers and argues Walker helps the Chiefs win but not Mahomes' fantasy numbers. The latest wire game fits that cautious read: no touchdowns, one interception and 16 rushing yards.
Where analysts split
The split is whether Mahomes' efficiency and touchdown volume recover under Bieniemy with Walker taking pressure off, or whether lost rushing production and thin target depth keep him a low-end QB1. Preseason sources lean one way or the other: SI and Soppe at PFN lean optimistic, while the other PFN outlook and CBS are more guarded. Most of this coverage predates the season, so how much of the debate in-season play has settled is not confirmed.
