Bo Nix
Nix is Denver's locked-in starter, but he is in a real slump through five games, and the rest of his season depends on whether he and Sean Payton can fix an offense that has stalled.

Nix is the every-down starting quarterback. Coach Sean Payton took back play-calling from coordinator Davis Webb in Week 5 (Yahoo, ESPN, Oct 11-13). Reporting says Payton has told him to "let 'er rip" (Denver Gazette, Oct 11). He has thrown a TD pass in each of the first five games and has a 6:3 TD:INT (ESPN). Yahoo has him on pace for about 119 rushing yards, well below his first two seasons, and it asks whether his fractured ankle is limiting his running. I found no snap-share figure and no backup quarterback competition in what I read.
The optimists point to his rookie-year production and his record of finishing no lower than seventh among QBs in fantasy points in each of his first two seasons (ESPN). They also point to the weak surroundings. SI's film room cites play-calling, skill-player miscues and offensive line problems in run blocking and pass protection. Payton's reported "let 'er rip" message and his return to play-calling could loosen him up. The Gazette's Kiszla, while harsh, says Denver needs only serviceable QB play and that Nix can be fixed.
The skeptics say the problem is Nix himself. Against the Chargers he threw for 123 yards on 4.5 yards per attempt, and the Broncos converted 1 of 12 third downs (Yahoo). SI's film room said he checked down against the 49ers and completed only two passes beyond 10 yards. Analysts Verderame and Kollman have questioned whether Denver should give him a big contract or pick up his fifth-year option (Yahoo). He also fumbled twice against the Chargers (our wire note), and his running has dropped off sharply.
Where analysts split
The disagreement is whether the offense's problems come from the system and play-calling (Webb, then Payton) or from Nix's own processing and decisions, such as leaving the pocket early, coming off reads and settling for check-downs. The Chargers game complicates the system explanation because the offense stayed stagnant after Payton took over play-calling.
