C.J. Stroud
Stroud is a high-volume starter on a 2-5 team, and he has been one of the league's most productive passers this season despite a weak line and run game.
Role
He is the Texans' full-time starting quarterback, with no designation and no competitor mentioned in any coverage I found. Houston leans on the pass because the run game is poor: SI (Oct. 25) has the Texans 25th in rushing yards and 26th in attempts, and has them fourth in passing yards through six games. Through seven weeks Stroud had 1,867 passing yards, fourth in the NFL, with an 11-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio (Toro Times, Oct. 26). That figure predates the Giants game, which our wire note covers. His main targets are Nico Collins, who returned from injury by Week 4, and Jaylin Noel, and Woody Marks is the running back the coverage names. Toro Times notes David Montgomery's groin problem dating from Week 5, and I did not find his current status. Stroud has added little as a runner: 66 rushing yards through four games, and four yards on two carries in the Giants game. Nick Caley is the play caller. I found no snap or target-share tracker data.
Coaches and writers say he is playing some of his best football. Coach DeMeco Ryans said everything runs through him and praised his reads and ball security. He was AFC Offensive Player of the Week after Week 6, with 312 yards and three touchdowns against Jacksonville. The run game is stuck near the bottom of the league, so the offense keeps throwing. NBC's player notes say it may keep letting him throw, and Ryans said he is open to leaning more on the passing game.
The offense around him is shaky. Toro Times calls the line a bottom-10 unit and calls Caley's play calling conservative at times. NBC describes an offense that bogs down with penalties and bad runs and settles for field goals. Houston has lost four straight one-score games, including Sunday's overtime loss, in which he threw for 153 yards on 17 of 28. A poor line and a run game that gets abandoned could cap touchdown output even when yardage is high.
Where analysts split
Broad agreement that Stroud himself is playing well. The open question is whether the offense around him improves, and that covers the line, the run game (Montgomery's health, Marks' role) and Caley's play calling. Those factors decide whether his passing volume holds or he trades volume for efficiency. I found no analyst split on Stroud himself.
