Deshaun Watson
Deshaun Watson is the Browns' starting QB, and coach Todd Monken said that isn't a week-to-week job. The team is 5-2 and he has led a game-winning drive in each of the five wins, so the job looks secure for now.

Starter over Shedeur Sanders, who is the backup (ESPN, August). Monken named Watson the starter on Aug. 24 after a camp competition (clevelandbrowns.com, ESPN). I found no snap share or designed-rush data. Last week he added a rushing TD, a 9-yarder, and Fox Sports called it his first since Week 2 of 2024. Rookie WR KC Concepcion had 8 catches for 129 yards in that game and Jerry Jeudy is a named target (Fox Sports). I did not find a full target distribution or depth chart.
The Browns are 5-2 and Watson has led a fifth game-winning drive this season, the most by a Browns QB in a season this century (ESPN Research). He just posted a season-high passing total (308 yards) in the 27-24 win over the Titans. CBS said Monken looks like a genius for starting him.
The record is built on comebacks: the Titans game was tied late, Cleveland trailed 14-0 early, and Fox noted he has not thrown a TD pass in two straight games. ESPN notes his struggles since joining the Browns in 2022. He was booed in preseason after a poor second preseason game and had a dismal Week 1, after which Monken still stuck with him. Sporting News predicted a bench move for Sanders, only later than expected.
Where analysts split
The question is whether the late-game success is sustainable or whether sluggish starts and a lack of touchdown passes will bring Sanders in. The Sporting News piece frames it as when, not whether. CBS and Fox treat the recent run as earned. I read only snippets of these sources, so the depth of the disagreement is unclear.
