Geno Smith is the Jets' starting quarterback, and the coverage I found treats him as a low-end QB2 or superflex-only option who is helped by a better supporting cast but limited by the offense around him.

He is the unquestioned QB1 per PFSN's preseason piece. No snap share or depth chart page was read, so I can't give one. Early-season notes show volume swings: 19 of 24 in the opener (RotoBaller via Fantasy Football Calculator) and 41 attempts in Week 2 (FantasyData). The wire note has him at 30 attempts and five rushes in Sunday's 17-12 win over the Browns. His targets are Garrett Wilson, Adonai Mitchell, rookies Omar Cooper Jr. and Kenyon Sadiq, Mason Taylor and Breece Hall. Draft Sharks expects Wilson to stay the No. 1 target. Carson Wentz was reported as squarely in the mix for the backup job at the time of the trade, and one outlet mentions a rookie QB as a possible fallback. Neither is confirmed as current.
The supporting cast is better than last year's. The line has two early first-round tackles with high ceilings, and two first-round rookie pass catchers joined Wilson and Hall. Early-season coverage called him a steady, turnover-light starter with high passing volume, and FantasyData saw top-16 upside in a high-volume game. He also finished 14th, 15th and 16th in the QB rankings in 2022 through 2024 (Fantasy Life).
He turns 36 and has thrown 60 touchdown passes over three seasons. Draft Sharks says his 2025 scoring average fell below all three of his Seattle seasons and below his rookie-year mark with the Jets. Skeptics also say the Jets could still be among the league's worst offenses, and PFSN flags a possible December benching if the team is losing. The lost fumble in the Browns game adds to the turnover concern, though the sources describe his early play as mostly clean.

The disagreement is whether a better cast and offensive line lift his ceiling above low-end QB2. The optimists point to Wilson, Hall and the rookies. The skeptics, including Draft Sharks and PFSN, say his arm and the offense cap it. A second question is how long he holds the job if the Jets lose, which is the benching risk PFSN raises.
