Matthew Stafford
Stafford is the Rams' locked-in starter and a high-volume passer, but the first five games show a quarterback whose efficiency and turnover rate are well below last season's MVP form.

He is the unquestioned starting QB in McVay's pass-heavy offense. The Yahoo/SI piece of about October 8 had the Rams second in passing yards per game (290.3) through four weeks. Monday's wire line was 54 attempts, and Week 3 was 55 attempts. Davante Adams, Puka Nacua, Terrance Ferguson and the tight ends are his targets. Kyren Williams and Blake Corum share the backfield. Turf Show Times noted two of his first four starts came without Nacua. I did not find a snap share, and I did not read a depth chart. SI mentions a first-round pick on the bench, but no report I found suggests a QB change.
The volume and the offense around him are real. The Rams ranked second in total and passing offense through four weeks, and sixth in success rate. Stafford's tight-window EPA per dropback ranked third, and his PFF big-time throws ranked seventh (Yahoo/SI, about Oct 8). Monday's 383 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions came in a game the Rams lost in overtime, and the team's own site quoted him praising the second-half scoring. Ramblin' Fan says McVay still backs him because of his late-game composure. Turf Show Times calls him the difference-maker against Denver and says the offense is best with him at QB.
The turnovers and the deep ball. He had six touchdowns and six interceptions through four games, and he threw an interception in every one of them, his longest such streak to open a season. His turnover-worthy play rate of 4.3 percent is his worst since 2009 (Yahoo/SI). His EPA per pass was -0.01 and ranked 19th, and the Rams ranked 19th in scoring at 21.3 points per game. His passer rating fell from 109.2 last season to 80.5. Analyst Tice said Stafford has barely thrown over the middle against Cover-2 looks. At 38, some wonder whether something has changed.
Where analysts split
Whether the early slump is fixable and situational (missing Nacua, pass protection, a throw-location tendency away from the middle of the field) or an age-related decline in accuracy and decision-making. Turf Show Times says it is too early to call him washed up, while Yahoo/SI argues he is one of the offense's weakest links. Nobody I found disputes his starting job.
