Michael Penix Jr.

Consensus #231 · QB29Week 9: vs CIN, 21st vs QBUpdated Oct 20

Penix is Atlanta's starting quarterback again after returning from ACL surgery, but he now carries a Questionable tag with an undisclosed cause, and I found no reporting that explains it.

Role

He has started since Week 3, after Cooper Rush started the first two games (both losses) while Tagovailoa had an oblique injury and Penix was out (NFL.com, ESPN). ESPN's Week 6 report had him at 67.5% completions, 719 yards, 3 TD and 1 INT before the Bears game. In that 31-23 loss he went 19 of 33 for 225 yards and 3 TD, with 5 sacks (ESPN player page, checked today). Tua Tagovailoa is the main backup and replaced him in overtime against Baltimore. Rush is also on the roster. I did not find a snap share or a published depth chart, so I am not stating either.

The case for

The Falcons scored a league-high 80 points in Weeks 3 and 4 combined after he returned, against 16 points in the two games Rush started (ESPN). He had his first multi-TD game of the season against Chicago, rallying from 28-7 down in the fourth quarter with scoring throws to Kyle Pitts and Jahan Dotson plus two-point conversions. Coach Kevin Stefanski said he did not expect to alter the scheme for the rib injury. The Falcons' own injury page (checked today) shows him as a full participant Wednesday through Friday, though its game status column read "unspecified."

The case against

His injury history is long: three ACL surgeries, with the latest in November 2025. He left the Baltimore game with a rib injury, and he visited the medical tent against Chicago and declined to explain it (Heavy). The Falcons are losing games and trailing early, and he took 5 sacks against Chicago. An undisclosed Questionable tag with Tagovailoa behind him leaves real risk that he misses time or is limited.

Where analysts split

The open question is whether he plays at all, and at full strength. The coverage I found does not link the current designation to the ribs or to the Bears tent visit, and no reporter I found has said what it is. I found no analyst debate over his role.

Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
