Shedeur Sanders
Sanders is Cleveland's backup and next in line, but as of Oct. 19–20 reporting the Browns have stayed with Deshaun Watson, so his rest-of-season value depends on a coaching decision that has not been made.
Role
Backup to Watson. Heavy reported on Oct. 19 that he entered the Ravens game with one pass attempt this season, and that Todd Monken kept him on the sideline after halftime despite a dismal first half. Heavy's headline says he is not getting on the field any time soon. I found no snap share, touch count or target data. No one else is named as competing for the QB2 spot in what I read. The wire note about re-evaluating after the Buccaneers game appears to date from Week 2, since the Browns have since played the Panthers, Jets and Ravens. Its logic that Sanders is next up still matches the current coverage.
Watson has been inconsistent. The Browns managed 46 net yards and three first downs in the first half against Baltimore, and Watson was sacked five times in the game. Bleacher Report's Brad Gagnon predicts a Week 14 benching, in a spot meant to evaluate Sanders before offseason decisions. Monken has said Sanders narrowed the gap over the offseason. Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot said continued struggles could eventually prompt a change.
Cleveland is 4-2 and in first place in the AFC North. Each of the four wins came from behind, and Watson has made the late plays in them. Monken gave him a game ball after the Ravens game. Monken's postgame comments called for more consistency but did not mention a change. Heavy's Oct. 19 article on the Ravens game says Sanders is not getting on the field any time soon. A winning team has little reason to switch quarterbacks, and Sanders has taken almost no regular-season snaps this year. Sanders has also hired an agent, which has fueled trade speculation, and that is a separate uncertainty about his future in Cleveland.
Where analysts split
The disagreement is whether Watson's uneven play, and the offense's struggles, will outweigh the team's winning record enough to trigger a change. Gagnon expects the Browns to wait until Week 14, when they may be out of contention. Local voices such as Gerstenhaber argue for sooner. Monken's public stance and the standings point to staying with Watson for now.
