Tua Tagovailoa
Tagovailoa is Atlanta's backup, and his near-term value depends on whether Michael Penix Jr.'s ribs keep Penix out of Sunday's Week 6 game against the Bears.

Penix is the current starter. Tagovailoa came in for one play in regulation and then took over in overtime, going 2 of 3 for 34 yards and the game-ending interception. I found no snap-share or touch data for Tagovailoa this season. Stefanski said Monday that he can "probably answer that better Wednesday" on whether Penix can start (AJC, Heavy, Oct. 12-13). The Athletic reported optimism that Penix will play. Yardbarker presumes Tagovailoa would start if Penix can't go, but I found no official statement of that. I did not fetch Atlanta's depth chart or injury report, so I can't say where either QB is listed today.
If Penix misses time, Tagovailoa is a veteran with a lot of starting experience. The Yahoo piece cites 120 touchdown passes and a 96.4 career passer rating in six Miami seasons. CBS described his quick, often accurate release as fitting Stefanski's offense and said to expect heavy volume to Bijan Robinson, Drake London and Kyle Pitts. Some outlets also say Tagovailoa won the job de facto in August, and the Falcons' decision-makers are not tied to Penix because they didn't draft him (PFT, 60 days old).
Penix has the job now, and Tagovailoa is only the backup unless the rib injury turns out to be more than a short-term problem. Penix called it not long-term, and multiple reports say it is not serious. CBS also flagged Tagovailoa's weak arm, limited mobility and turnover issues. His only regular-season snaps with Atlanta ended in an interception, and the Falcons were 2-0 in Penix's starts before Sunday's loss.
Where analysts split
The open question is whether Penix's ribs let him start against the Bears. The Athletic reported optimism that he will play. Stefanski hasn't committed and wants to see how Penix responds over a couple of days. A second question is how long a rebuilt Penix keeps the job if he is healthy. I found no analysts arguing Tagovailoa should start over a healthy Penix.
