Tyler Shough
Shough is the Saints' entrenched starter for the rest of the season, and his production depends heavily on whether Kellen Moore's offense can solve its protection and early-down problems.

He is the unquestioned QB1. Moore's postgame comments (Heavy, Oct 12) backed him after the Vikings game, and Moore put the blame on his own play-calling and on pass protection. I found no report of a QB change or a competing starter. ESPN's page lists Spencer Rattler and Zach Wilson as the other QBs on the roster. I did not find snap counts for him, and none are needed for a starting QB. ESPN's 2026 line before the Vikings game had him sixth in passing yards, with 1,299 yards, 9 TDs and 5 INTs. He also runs a little: ESPN's profile credits him with 3 TDs on the ground as a rookie, and he has 41 rushing yards in home games this year. Receivers named in coverage include Chris Olave, and Alvin Kamara and Kendre Miller are the backs in the Vikings game coverage. The Saints are 1-4 and play the Giants in Week 6.
Shough was among the NFL passing leaders going into the Vikings game, per Heavy. The Vikings game was an outlier against an aggressive Brian Flores defense. PFF charting had Minnesota blitzing on 23 of his 27 dropbacks. The Saints' offense managed just 142 total yards. Moore blamed protection and his own play-calling rather than Shough. Optimists expect that a team in catch-up mode will keep throwing, and that Moore will fix the first-down predictability and low play-action rate.
The Saints are 1-4, and the offense has been slow out of the gate, with 29 first-quarter three-and-outs against 35 first-quarter points under Moore (Louisiana Sports). Shough posted a 38.1 passer rating and 3.8 yards per attempt against the Vikings, and ESPN's recap says he got the ball out quickly under duress. Skeptics worry that other defenses will copy Minnesota's blitz-heavy approach and that the protection problems will persist. FTN had the Saints at 17.7% play action before this game, fourth-lowest in the NFL. Shough also has an extensive college injury history (CBS), though I found no current injury report.
Where analysts split
The disagreement is about cause: whether the offensive failures come from Moore's predictable play-calling and weak protection, or from Shough being exposed against aggressive pressure. Drew Brees criticized the first-down calls and the lack of play action on the Fox broadcast. Moore's own postgame comments sit on the play-calling and protection side. I did not find an analyst arguing that Shough should be benched.
