Brandon Montour

Consensus #176 · D25 · tier 9Week 5: 2 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Montour is a second-pair right-side defenseman who plays on the second power-play unit and the second penalty-kill unit. His availability for Tuesday against Detroit is in doubt because of a lower-body injury.

Role

Daily Faceoff's Kraken line page, fetched 2 November (last updated 1 November), has him on the second pair with Ryker Evans, on the second power-play unit, and on the second penalty-kill unit. That second power-play unit is Kakko, Catton, Wood and Samoskevich with Montour. The first pair is Vince Dunn and Adam Larsson, and Dunn runs the first power-play unit. Inside the Rink's 30 October preview for Calgary had the same pairing and the same second-unit power-play and penalty-kill slots, with Shane Wright at center on that second unit. I did not find reported ice-time numbers for this season.

The case for

He still has a power-play role. He scored the game-winner in the final minute against Toronto on 28 October. Inside the Rink's 15 October preview had him on the first power-play unit, so he has been used there before. If the first unit is reshuffled, he is the obvious candidate to move up. He also kills penalties on the second unit.

The case against

He sits behind Dunn on the Kraken's top power-play unit and behind Dunn and Larsson on the blue line. The second power-play unit is the weaker group, so his scoring chances there are limited. He is also dealing with a lower-body injury, and last season's line of 13 games played and 313 minutes of ice time shows how little he played. The injury is currently a game-time decision.

Where analysts split

Broad agreement on his role: the sources I found put him on the second pair and second power-play unit. The one open question is whether he gets back on the first power-play unit. Inside the Rink had him there on 15 October but on the second unit on 30 October, and Daily Faceoff and ESPN show him on the second unit. I found no analyst argument about this, only the lineup changes.
