Matthew Schaefer
Matthew Schaefer is a 19-year-old first-pair defenseman who also quarterbacks the Islanders' top power-play unit, and he is the team's most-used blueliner. He was named an alternate captain for this season.
Role
Daily Faceoff's Islanders page (fetched Nov 2, last updated Oct 31) shows Schaefer in the first defensive pairing slot and on the 1st power-play unit, with Palmieri, Horvat, Schenn and Holmstrom. The page names Pelech as his partner. Newer beat-based reporting has him with Logan Stanley. The Morning Puck's Oct 31 game vs. EDM shows Pelech-Schaefer, with Schaefer at 24:33. Puckfeed's Oct 25 game and SI's recent power rankings (about Oct 29) both have Stanley-Schaefer. SI reported a 30-minute game at Minnesota, where he scored twice including the overtime winner. Competition for his power-play role is the second unit's blueliner, Tony DeAngelo. In camp, DeBoer had Schaefer playing both sides, and the ultimate decision depended on how the rest of the defense sorted out.
He is the undisputed power-play quarterback, plays heavy minutes (30 in one recent game), and is producing, including a two-goal game that ended in overtime. SI calls him a bona fide superstar. A power play that scored three times in the preseason opener with him up top is the case for upside. He has also shown he can play either side, which gives the coach flexibility without costing him minutes.
The Islanders' power play has been weak: The Hockey News had it converting 15.8 percent as of Oct 29, ranked 25th. The top unit's makeup has shifted with injuries to Ritchie and Maccelli (reported Oct 19), and Barzal is also out with a knee issue. A team short on forward talent limits how many assists he can collect. Workloads near 30 minutes are also a fatigue and injury risk for a 19-year-old across an 84-game season.
Where analysts split
The open question is who he plays with at even strength, Pelech or Stanley. Daily Faceoff and some game sheets show Pelech, while other recent reports show Stanley, and Pelech has also appeared on a different pair with Pulock. I did not find reporting arguing that the partner changes his production, so treat this as a lineup-detail split, not a debate about his role.
