Roman Josi

Consensus #54 · D5 · tier 5Week 5: 3 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Josi is Nashville's top-pair defenseman and first power-play quarterback, and the reporting I found shows no sign of that changing this season.

Role

Reporting from 31 October has him on the top pair with Adam Wilsby. That comes from Brooks Bratten's warmup lineup as relayed by GameDayLines, and from Inside the Rink's 10/31 game preview. The same Inside the Rink preview lists him on the first power-play unit with Forsberg, O'Reilly, Marchessault and Stamkos. Brady Skjei runs the second unit. Skjei's usual defense partner is Nick Perbix. The Morning Puck's line page, about 11 days old when indexed, showed Josi at 27:33 of ice time in a game, but that is one game and not an average. I could not fetch the Daily Faceoff line page (the fetch failed), so I am not reporting what it says today. The only competition for his minutes I saw is Skjei, who has the second power-play unit.

The case for

He is on the top pair and the first power-play unit. That unit has Forsberg, O'Reilly, Stamkos and Marchessault around him, which supports power-play assists. Last season he had 9 power-play points and 40 shots on goal in 14 games. A Morning Puck page that was current about 11 days before it was indexed showed 27:33 for him in a game, and a Frozen Pool page for 2025-26 listed 24:53 of average ice time. I did not verify that Frozen Pool figure against our own data.

The case against

He turns 36 and our data has only 14 games played last season, so durability is the main worry. Daily Faceoff's player news page shows earlier stretches without him, including an upper-body scratch and a long absence. Those items are undated in the search result and I could not tie them to a specific season, so treat them as a pattern to watch. The Predators ran a five-forward top power-play unit when he was out, so his power-play role depends on his being healthy. Nashville's lineup also keeps changing. Between 10/29 and 10/31 the forward lines shifted, and Bourque was listed as injured in a 12 October practice report.
