Quinn Hughes
Quinn Hughes is Minnesota's top defenseman and the quarterback of the first power-play unit, with no sign in current reporting that either role is under threat.
Role
Daily Faceoff's Wild page (fetched 26 October, last updated that day from the 25 October game) lists him first among the defensive pairings, next to Jared Spurgeon. It also lists him on the first power-play unit with Shabanov, Eriksson Ek, Kaprizov and Boldy. Inside the Rink's 25 October projection matches that pairing and unit. ESPN shows 27:02 average ice time in October. The Hockey News reported about nine days ago that coach John Hynes is deliberately trying to put Hughes on the ice with Kaprizov's line, though Hynes said it does not happen all the time. The second power-play unit on Daily Faceoff has no defenseman other than Jonas Brodin listed. I did not read a source that says who would take his power-play work if he missed games.
He plays huge minutes, runs the top power play, and the coaches are matching his shifts to Kaprizov, Boldy and Eriksson Ek. ESPN's note after the 18 October win over Vancouver credits him with 3 goals, 13 assists, 6 power-play points and 37 shots in 13 games. Star Tribune reporting says the Wild's power play rose to third in the league once he arrived, finishing last regular season at 25.2%.
The Wild's top power-play group is still working on chemistry. Star Tribune, in an older piece, noted the unit had scored only twice with him early on, and Hughes himself said they were not yet at the level of Colorado's established unit. ESPN's 18 October note says he had gone eight games without a goal before that game. His heavy minutes also depend on the shift coordination Hynes admits is not constant.
Where analysts split
Broad agreement on his role: first-pair minutes and first power-play unit. The only inconsistency I found is his defensive partner. Daily Faceoff, Inside the Rink and The Morning Puck show Spurgeon, while 5v5 Hockey's 20 October page showed Brodin. Old beat-writer tweets from about 24 days ago showed Faber, and that appears stale. The partner changes little for his usage.
