Charlie McAvoy
McAvoy is the top-pair right-side defenseman on a Bruins team that was 10-4-1 going into Monday's game, and he is projected for the first power-play unit and the penalty kill.
Role
Inside the Rink's game previews for Oct. 29, Oct. 31 and Nov. 2 (projected lines, not read from a live page) list him on the first pair with Hampus Lindholm. The same previews have him on the first power-play unit with Geekie, Elias Lindholm, Zacha and Pastrnak, and on the first penalty-kill unit with Elias Lindholm, Khusnutdinov and Hampus Lindholm. Mason Lohrei is on the second power-play unit. An ESPN depth chart snippet from about eight days ago lists him on PP1 but puts him on the second penalty-kill unit with Zadorov, so the penalty-kill slot is not settled across sources. The wire note has him at a game-high 28:35 in a preseason game. I found no regular-season ice-time figure, so I am not giving one. His second pair is Zadorov and Borgen.
He holds the right-side top-pair job, plays on the first power-play unit with Pastrnak, and kills penalties. The preseason wire note shows a game-high 28:35 of ice time, and every source I found has him in the same top role. That is a heavy-minutes profile with offensive power-play usage.
He played only 9 games last season (8 points, 226 TOI), so durability is the open question. I found no reporting on why, and I am not guessing at it. The power-play role also belongs to a unit built around Pastrnak, Zacha and Elias Lindholm. A tracking snippet from the Oct. 31 game had the Lindholm-McAvoy pair with a 39.1 percent shot-attempt share at even strength, but that is one game and I am not drawing conclusions from it.
