Darren Raddysh

Consensus #130 · D17 · tier 8Week 5: 3 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Toronto signed him to a large eight-year deal as a right-shot, puck-moving defenseman and the club's highest-paid blueliner, so he is a fixture in the offensive role. I could not verify his current pairing or power-play unit.

Role

I could not read Daily Faceoff's line page this session, so I have no confirmed pairing, power-play unit or current ice time. Puckpedia's profile, indexed 135 days ago and possibly stale, lists 18:06 of 5-on-5 time per game, 3:25 on the power play and 0:47 on the penalty kill over 16 games. It does not say which pairing or unit that was. NHL.com's trade story says Toronto wanted him to help restructure a defense that allowed the second-most goals per game in the league last season. That implies a major role, but no source I read states the pairing. Emil Andrae was also acquired in the same restructuring. Morgan Rielly was reported by Dreger as likely to be traded, and Jake McCabe was also drawing interest, so who competes for his power-play minutes is unconfirmed.

The case for

Toronto paid for a top-pair, power-play role, and the club's general manager has said he believes in Raddysh's game. Eliteprospects' player page, which I could not date, shows 4 points in his last 5 games and 7 in his last 10, all assists. Our supplied line shows 9 assists in 16 games, 5 of them on the power play, and 35 shots on goal. Eliteprospects calls him a heavy shooter, which suggests goals could follow. His playing time at 5-on-5 and on the power play supports a steady offensive role.

The case against

Editor in Leaf ran pieces headlined that the signing was a massive risk and that an insider says betting big on him could backfire (Sept. 30 headline, per The Stanley Cap). The skeptics' concern is whether his production travels from Tampa Bay, where he played alongside strong teammates. Our supplied line has no goals in 16 games, a -3 rating and only 9 hits, so the output is all assists. Toronto's weak defensive record could also expose him in a heavy-minutes role.

Where analysts split

The split I can document is whether the Tampa Bay production holds up in Toronto's weaker defensive environment and for an $8.5 million cap hit. I read only headlines on the skeptical side, not the arguments themselves. I found no analyst disagreement on his line or power-play placement.

Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
