Devon Toews
Devon Toews is the top-pair partner of Cale Makar and a penalty-kill regular, and his power-play slot is the open question: second unit in most listings I found, with one listing placing him on the first.
Role
Top defensive pair with Cale Makar in the three sources I read: Inside the Rink's Oct. 31 Flames preview (projected lines), ESPN's line-combo page (indexed 12 days ago), and Puckcast (last game Oct. 25, updated Oct. 27). The Inside the Rink preview also has him on the first penalty-kill unit, with Makar and two forwards (Parker Kelly and Nicolas Roy). ESPN also lists him on the PK1 pair with Makar. Inside the Rink has him on the second power-play unit with Lehkonen, Landeskog, Schwartz and Nelson, and ESPN also puts him on PP2. Puckcast lists a combined PP1 group that includes both Toews and Makar. I did not find ice-time figures for this season. Daily Faceoff's Avalanche page loaded, but it was last updated April 20, so I am not using it for the current lines. His top-pair work comes with Makar, and Brett Kulak, Sam Malinski, Brent Burns and Noah Juulsen make up the rest of the defense in these listings.
He plays on the top pair next to Makar and on the first penalty-kill unit, and he runs the second power-play unit. Puckcast's listing of him on PP1 shows he can move up. An earlier gamedaytweets item (indexed 303 days ago, so from a previous stretch) has him running PP1 when Makar sat out in Dallas. That suggests he steps into the top power-play job whenever Makar is out.
He mostly sits on the second power-play unit, behind a first unit led by Makar and the top forwards (Inside the Rink and ESPN both list Makar on PP1 and Toews on PP2). Our data shows only 14 games and 13 points last season, so there is little recent production to lean on. At 32 he has no confirmed power-play promotion this season.
Where analysts split
Whether Toews holds a first power-play unit spot alongside Makar, or stays on the second unit. Puckcast (Oct. 27) shows him in the PP1 group, while Inside the Rink (Oct. 31) and ESPN list him on PP2. The sources differ and I found no beat-writer comment explaining it.
Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
