Dougie Hamilton
Dougie Hamilton is a second-pair right-side defenseman who plays both special teams, so his fantasy value comes from power-play shots and points, with little else.
Role
Daily Faceoff's line page (fetched 26 October, last updated 25 October from the 24 October game vs. Los Angeles) lists him on the second pair with Jonas Siegenthaler, behind Luke Hughes and Brett Pesce on the first pair. The same page puts him on the second power-play unit with Timo Meier, Evan Rodrigues, Anthony Mantha and Arseny Gritsyuk. The first power-play unit has no other defenseman except Luke Hughes. He is also on the first penalty-kill unit with Nico Hischier, Evan Rodrigues and Siegenthaler. Dobber's Frozen Tools showed him on the ice for about 15 minutes at even strength in the 24 October game. Brenden Dillon, Johnathan Kovacevic and Declan Chisholm are on the third pair, and the 24 October game previews I found had Chisholm and Kovacevic as that pair. Dobber's season card, as it stood after the first five games, showed him at 21:36 TOI and 2:03 PPTOI. That page is only partly current, so treat the figures with caution.
He has the NHL's most extreme shooting profile among defensemen, and he still plays the power play and the penalty kill every night, which keeps his shot, block and special-teams volume up. Last season he had 28 SOG and 18 BLK in only 11 GP. A full 84-game season at a similar rate would produce a lot of volume. Because he is on the second power-play unit, any change to the first unit, such as an injury or a struggling Luke Hughes, could return him to the top spot. Earlier Daily Faceoff and Rotowire items, from the previous season, described him as the top-unit power-play defenseman until Luke Hughes and Simon Nemec took time there.
He is no longer the first-unit power-play quarterback. Current lines have Luke Hughes there, and Hamilton is on the second unit, which gets less time. He is also the second-pair partner of Siegenthaler rather than a top-pair player. Last season he played only 11 GP and had 0 PPP, and the earlier Daily Faceoff and Rotowire coverage described injury absences in the previous season. At age 33 with that injury history, availability is a real risk. The 24 October game sheet showed Hamilton and Siegenthaler on the ice for 15:00 of even-strength time. That is a moderate load, not top-pair minutes.
Where analysts split
The open question is whether he gets back to the first power-play unit, or stays on the second unit behind Luke Hughes. I found no analyst piece arguing either side this season. The question comes from his current deployment on Daily Faceoff and ESPN against his earlier first-unit role. Health is a second unknown: I did not find a current injury report, and his designation is clear.
Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
