Erik Karlsson
Karlsson is the Penguins' top-pair right-shot defenseman and first-unit power-play quarterback, and the coverage I found has his role as settled and his defensive play as the open question.
Role
Daily Faceoff's line page (fetched 26 Oct, last updated 25 Oct from the 24 Oct game) has him on the first pair with Spencer Stastney. It has him on the first power-play unit with Ville Koivunen, Tommy Novak, Rickard Rakell and Sidney Crosby. It also has him on the second penalty-kill unit with Stastney. Kris Letang is on the second power-play unit and the third pair with Ilya Solovyov, so Letang is the nearest rival for power-play time. ESPN's player page shows 23:32 TOI/G in October across 10 games, including 27:40 in a 5-4 loss to Utah. That page's indexing date is unclear, so treat the usage figures as approximate. I did not read any report of a last-season partner, so I can't say how long Stastney has been his partner this season.
He is producing as a power-play quarterback. ESPN's page shows 1 goal and 9 assists in October, and its recap notes a power-play goal and assist against Utah, with 11 points through 10 games. He plays about 23 to 27 minutes with first-unit power-play time and no designation. Last season's 12 points in 12 games, 5 of them on the power play, point the same way. Reporting from last season said he looked rejuvenated under coach Dan Muse.
He is 36, and last season's line is only 12 GP with 20 SOG, so shot volume has been modest. The Hockey News's game recap (published about a day before this check) said the Stastney-Karlsson pair was all over the place against Nashville. It said Karlsson blew coverage on a near-goal, and Stastney blew coverage on a goal against. His partner has changed from last season's pairing and the second-unit power-play slot is open to Letang, so ice time and unit placement could move if the pairing struggles. Nothing I found says that is happening.
Where analysts split
Broad agreement on his role: first pair and first power-play unit. I found no current analyst split on his usage. The only live question is whether the Stastney pairing holds up defensively, and I found one game recap questioning it and no wider debate.
