Jake Sanderson

Consensus #127 · D16 · tier 8Week 5: 2 gamesUpdated Oct 26

Sanderson is Ottawa's top left-side defenseman and first-unit power-play quarterback. He is back after an eight-game absence, and the main risk for the rest of the season is another lower-body problem.

Role

Daily Faceoff's line page (fetched 26 Oct, last updated 25 Oct from the 24 Oct game) lists him on the first pair with Artem Zub. The same page has him on the first power-play unit with Drake Batherson, Stephen Halliday, Dylan Cozens and Tim Stützle, and on the first penalty-kill unit with Shane Pinto, Ridly Greig and Zub. The second pair is Tyler Kleven and Jordan Spence. Thomas Chabot, the newly named captain, is not on the page's defensive pairings. A beat-writer line tweet from 21 Oct also had Sanderson-Zub as the first pair. A Morning Puck box score showed Sanderson at 23:11 in a recent game, but I could not date that game. He returned against Florida after missing eight games with a lower-body injury from the 3 Oct opener, per Travis Green via The Athletic's Julian McKenzie. The wire's day-to-day note is not explained in the coverage I found.

The case for

He is the first-pair defenseman on a team that missed him badly. He is on the top power-play unit and the top penalty-kill unit, so he gets the heaviest minutes and the most special-teams time on the blue line. Pre-season reporting leaned on his heavy workload as Ottawa's top defenseman, and he finished 10th in Norris voting last season per theScore.

The case against

Health is the issue. He was hurt in his only preseason game and again in the opener. Green said he pulled himself from the opener over fear of reaggravating a previous injury (Pro Hockey Rumors, 4 Oct). He also missed 15 games last season with a concussion and an upper-body injury, so the lower-body problem could linger or recur. The wire's day-to-day tag fits that risk. Ottawa also deployed Chabot heavily in his absence, so his minutes could be managed.

Where analysts split

Broad agreement on his role: first pair, first power play, first penalty kill. The only open question is durability, specifically whether the lower-body issue recurs and whether Green limits his minutes. The coverage I found did not frame that as an analyst split.
