Jakob Chychrun
Chychrun is a right-handed-shooting-agnostic offensive defenseman who has started 2026-27 producing, with a goal and an assist in the Oct. 3 opener and two assists on Oct. 25, but I found no current line or power-play chart, so his exact deployment is unconfirmed.
Role
I could not read a current line combination or power-play page: my one search returned older material and the page I fetched (CBS Sports player page) returned only navigation menus. What I have is Rotowire blurbs syndicated on CBS Sports. The Oct. 3, 2026 blurb has him scoring a power-play goal in the opener, so he was on a power-play unit that night. The Oct. 25 blurb has two assists, four shots on goal and five blocked shots in a 4-3 overtime win over Buffalo. A November 2025 piece described him as half of Washington's second defense pairing with Matt Roy, and a January 2026 Rotowire note described a usual top-four role with power-play time. Both are from last season, and I have not confirmed that either still holds. Current power-play unit, pairing partner and ice time are not confirmed.
He is a shot-first offensive defenseman with power-play usage. The Hockey News (about 337 days old) described him quarterbacking Washington's power play on a hot start that included a 10-game point streak and a league-leading goal total among defensemen. Earlier coverage had Washington using two defensemen on the top unit with him as the second. This season's early blurbs show the same pattern: a power-play goal in the opener, then volume (four shots, five blocks) on Oct. 25.
The evidence on his current role is thin and mostly dated. Rotowire's older preview said he might split time between the first and second power-play units, and noted that his minutes and power-play looks might not support much offensive improvement. A Fantasy Data snippet of undetermined date listed him on a third power-play unit, which I could not date or verify. His 2025-26 line in our data (13 GP, 9 PTS) is a small sample. I have no current report on health or pairing, so a drop in scoring or a change in unit would be a risk I cannot size.
Where analysts split
The open question is whether he holds a top power-play unit all season or splits time with a second unit. Older coverage disagrees on this, and I found no current analyst piece to settle it.
Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
