Lane Hutson
Lane Hutson is Montreal's top-pair left-side defenseman and a first power-play unit fixture, so for the rest of this season he is a high-usage offensive defenseman with no designation.
Role
Daily Faceoff's Canadiens page (fetched 2 Nov, last updated 31 Oct) lists him on the first defensive pairing with Noah Dobson. It also has him on the first power-play unit with Juraj Slafkovsky, Zack Bolduc, Cole Caufield and Alex Newhook, with Dobson on the second unit. Inside the Rink's 31 Oct preview shows the same pairing, though its first unit has Kirby Dach in place of Newhook. A Dobber (Frozen Pool) page showed him at 26:45 average ice time and 4:13 of power-play time per game over his first 5 games. That page is a snippet and I did not fetch it. The same page showed 6:18 of power-play time in the 10 Oct Detroit game. I did not see a current line for him on the penalty kill. Kaiden Guhle and Alexandre Carrier are on the second pair. Mike Matheson sat out in Dallas with a lower-body injury, per Daily Faceoff's team news and Inside the Rink. Nothing I found puts any of those players in a competition with Hutson for his pairing or power-play spot.
He is the top-pair left defenseman and the one defenseman on the first power-play unit in the lines I read. Inside the Rink's 31 Oct preview notes he passed Henri Richard for the most assists by a Canadiens player before age 23. The Dobber snippet showed 4 assists in his first 5 games, with the power play taking most of his special-teams minutes. The optimists would add that Montreal is 8-3-2 and he is the quarterback of its top offensive units.
His goal total has been modest and his offense leans on assists. A CBS/RotoWire note from earlier in his career said only nine of his points had come on the power play, which suggested room for growth. The skeptics would also point to a crowded first power-play unit of high-end forwards, and to Dobson, who can run the power play himself: ESPN and 5v5hockey showed Dobson on PP1 at times, and CBS noted a night when he and Hutson swapped roles. Any defensive burden from Matheson's absence also lands on the top pair.
Where analysts split
The only disagreement I found is over who shares the first power-play unit's defense spots. Daily Faceoff and Inside the Rink list Hutson as the lone defenseman with four forwards. 5v5hockey (27 Oct) and an ESPN depth page I did not fetch pair him with Dobson on PP1. No source I found questions his place on the unit.
