MacKenzie Weegar
Weegar is a top-pair right-side defenseman and first-unit penalty killer for Utah. Every current source I read has him next to Mikhail Sergachev, but his power-play role is not settled.
Role
ESPN's Utah line-combo page, fetched 2 November, has Weegar on the first pair with Sergachev, on the first penalty-kill pair with Sergachev, and on power-play unit 2 (with Barrett Hayton listed as the other defenseman). Inside the Rink's projected lineups for 22 October, 29 October and 1 November all list Sergachev–Weegar as Pair 1. The 29 October preview also puts Weegar on PP2 and PK1. Sergachev runs the first power-play unit. Nate Schmidt and Andrew Peeke are listed as the second pair on ESPN. John Marino and Maveric Lamoureux are on injured reserve there, and ESPN lists Dmitri Simashev on the third pair. PuckFeed's shift-chart page showed 18:17 of 5v5 time and 2:03 of penalty-kill time per game over a 4-game window, with no power-play time. That page was indexed about a month ago, so treat it as early-season only. I have not read a beat-writer or Daily Faceoff source.
He plays on the top pair beside Sergachev, plays on the first penalty-kill unit, and has been listed on the second power-play unit in current projections. Sergachev–Weegar was also Utah's heavily used pairing last season, per PuckFeed (305 minutes together). Marino being on injured reserve leaves less competition for right-side minutes.
The power-play role is thin: PuckFeed's early-season window showed no power-play ice time for him, and the first unit runs through Sergachev, not Weegar. His 2025-26 numbers in our data were 4 points in 15 games and 0 power-play points. His value is mostly physical (51 hits, 40 blocks) and penalty-kill work, not scoring.
Where analysts split
Broad agreement on the top-pair and penalty-kill role. The one open question is whether he gets real power-play time. Some projections list him on PP2 (ESPN, and Inside the Rink on 29 October), while PuckFeed's early-season ice-time window showed none. Inside the Rink's 1 November preview list only the pairings and the power-play lines were not in the excerpt I read, so I cannot say whether he is still on PP2.
Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
