Oliver Bonk
Oliver Bonk is a 21-year-old rookie right-shot defenseman who started the season in the AHL and has played his way into the Flyers' lineup. Reporting puts him on a middle pair with a second-unit power-play slot, and his place is not yet safe.
Role
Daily Faceoff's Flyers page (fetched Nov. 1, updated that day, sourced to Will James) lists him on the second defensive pair with Cam York. It has Sanheim-Drysdale first and Seeler-Benoit third. It also lists him on the second power-play unit with Konecny, Dvorak, Foerster and Tippett. The first unit is Martone, Barkey, Michkov, Zegras and Drysdale. He is not on either penalty-kill unit on that page. Other pairings differ: Inside the Rink's Nov. 1 preview for Utah has Benoit-Bonk as the third pair. A Game Day Lines post of Oct. 31 practice lines has the same Benoit-Bonk pairing. The Hockey News (Oct. 20) reported he averaged exactly 20 minutes a night since joining the lineup on Oct. 11, including a career-high 24:22 against Colorado, mostly beside Sanheim. The Morning Puck's Oct. 28 box at Washington shows him at 18:22 alongside Hunter McDonald. Competition for the work comes from Benoit, McDonald, David Jiricek, Helge Grans and Rasmus Ristolainen. Ristolainen was on injured reserve as of Oct. 20, and I did not find a current update on him.
The Hockey News argued on Oct. 20 that he has held up in a top-pair shutdown role. In 13:31 at 5-on-5 against MacKinnon, the Flyers controlled 79.49% of expected goals. He also set up a goal with a point shot and has been producing: he has 6 points in 10 games this season. Yahoo's player page links a column arguing the Flyers should keep him in a top-pair role even at full strength. The Hockey News says he has earned his spot on merit.
His usage has slipped from the 20-plus minutes of mid-October. The most recent lines have him on a lower pair, and in at least some of them he plays beside Benoit. He was a minus-6 in his 10 games. He had a rough Oct. 11 debut: minus-3 in 16:28 with two penalties. He did not make the team out of camp. He also has little track record: 46 AHL games last season with a minus-14 rating. A returning Ristolainen or a lineup push from Jiricek could squeeze him out of the lineup or send him back down. He is waivers exempt, and The Hockey News framed the roster decision as a tough one for the front office.
Where analysts split
Whether he stays in a top-four role once the defense is at full strength. The Hockey News and Yahoo's linked column say yes. The latest published lines (Nov. 1 Daily Faceoff, Oct. 31 practice) have him on a pair below Sanheim-Drysdale. Reporters also disagree on his partner: Daily Faceoff has York, while Inside the Rink and the Oct. 31 practice lines have Benoit. A second open question is whether he keeps the second power-play slot against Jiricek, whom The Hockey News said had taken on an important power-play role.
