Tristan Luneau
Luneau is a 22-year-old right-shot defenseman who just signed a long extension and is a regular in Anaheim's lineup, though he is currently on the third pair and the second power-play unit.
Role
Daily Faceoff's Ducks line page (fetched 26 Oct, last updated 25 Oct after the 24 Oct game) lists him on the third defensive pair, the second power-play unit and the first penalty-kill unit. The page does not show ice time. His partner varies by source: 5v5 Hockey (24 Oct) has Travis Mitchell, and Morning Puck (about six days old) has Tyson Hinds. On the 24 Oct game, Morning Puck shows him on the third pair at 17:47. The first pair is Jackson LaCombe with Noah Warren, and LaCombe runs the first power-play unit. Daily Faceoff's player page (22 Oct) had him averaging 21:10 through nine games, so his minutes have moved around, and he was a healthy scratch in New Jersey on 22 Oct with Nick Jensen drawing in. He scored a goal and added two assists in the 5-4 win over Philadelphia on 24 Oct.
GM Pat Verbeek called him a top-four defenseman for years to come, and the Ducks backed that with a six-year, $43.2 million extension that starts in 2027-28. Four regular defensemen from last season (Trouba, Gudas, Zellweger, Carlson) are gone, which opens minutes on the right side. He played 26:58 in the season opener and had an assist. Dobber Prospects called him the Ducks' only right-shot defense prospect with clear top-four upside. He already has penalty-kill time and a second-unit power-play slot, and he put up 41 points in 69 AHL games last season.
He has about 15 NHL games of experience, and he sat as a healthy scratch on 22 Oct just days after the extension. He is on the third pair, not the top four the club says it envisions. Dobber Prospects warned that cracking the top power-play unit would be hard against LaCombe, Zellweger and Mintyukov, and the current first unit is Sennecke, Carlsson, Granlund, LaCombe and Gauthier with no other defenseman. His NHL scoring so far is small: one goal and four assists in 11 games last season, with no power-play points. His NHL track record is too short to show whether the offense carries over.
Where analysts split
The open question is whether he moves from the third pair and second power-play unit up to the top four. The Ducks' words and contract say yes. Current deployment, including the 22 Oct scratch and the third-pair lines, says not yet. I found no beat-writer or Athletic commentary arguing either side directly, so this is my reading of the sources, not a debate analysts are having. Sources also disagree on his partner (Mitchell or Hinds).
