Caleb Martin

Consensus #217 · PF86 · tier 6Week 3: 4 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Martin is a fringe forward who returned from a thumb sprain and has played in the two games since, with minutes that depend on Dallas's injuries.

Role

ESPN's game log (indexed snippet, not checked live) shows his season debut on Oct. 28 vs. OKC: 14 minutes, 10 points. On Oct. 30 vs. HOU he played 25 minutes, scored 8 and committed 5 fouls. ESPN notes Naji Marshall (illness), Sergio de Larrea (knee) and Santi Aldama (knee) were unavailable for the debut. NBC Sports described the Mavericks' many injuries as what pushed him into the rotation. I found no confirmed starting five, no usage rate, and nothing on back-to-back rest. I did not read any live depth chart or rotation tracker. Games after Oct. 30 are not covered in what I found. The supplied wire line calling him questionable for the Thunder game matches the Oct. 28 coverage, and he played that night.

The case for

A Fox Sports piece argues his perimeter defense gives him an edge to crack Dusty May's rotation, since May wants to improve the team's defense. He got 25 minutes against Houston, and the injuries around him create openings.

The case against

Yahoo Sports (about a month ago) said he has very little role given how many forwards Dallas has. It saw no path to playing time unless injuries hit, and noted Dallas doesn't technically own its pick. Fox Sports also described a crowded forward rotation with no guaranteed minutes. NBC Sports said that even if he slides into the rotation, he isn't worth rostering in redraft leagues. Last season he played only 2 games and 78 minutes.

Where analysts split

The question is whether his minutes survive once Marshall, Aldama and de Larrea are all healthy. Defense-focused coverage says his perimeter defense earns him a spot. Roster-math coverage says he only plays when injuries force it. I found no beat-writer reporting settling this after his first two games.

Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
