Dean Wade
Wade is a defense-first forward on a deep roster who has started two games in a row because of injuries and rest. Reporting expects him to move to the bench once the 76ers are healthy.
Role
He missed the first two games with a left ankle sprain, then played 28 minutes in his 76ers debut on Saturday against the Bucks. He started that game with LeBron James out, alongside Maxey, Edgecombe, Brown and Embiid (NBC Sports, ESPN, Oct 24). The Fadeaway World player ratings (published after the 76ers' next game) list him as a starter again, with 37 minutes, 7 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 block. Basketnews says Embiid was absent and puts Wade, Adem Bona and James in the center rotation that weekend. Fox Sports says he will likely be a bench player when Philadelphia is healthy. Metro Philadelphia says he served as a situational small-ball 5 while Bona missed the preseason. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Jabari Walker and Justin Edwards are named as competitors for the bench minutes. I found no minutes or usage figures for a healthy lineup.
He fits a defensive-versatility role next to high-usage stars, and Maxey has said he wants Wade to shoot threes often. He has already shown steals and blocks in his first two games (3 steals and 1 block on Saturday). Depth is thin when stars rest or get hurt, so he has started twice and played 28 and 37 minutes.
RotoWire calls his role one with minimal upside, and says he is an inefficient shooter with poor playmaking and a low block rate. Rotoballer sees him as a low-usage connector, with value limited to threes, rebounds and defensive stats. With James, Brown and Embiid healthy, the starts and big minutes go away. He also just missed two games with the ankle sprain.
Where analysts split
The question is how many minutes he keeps once the starters are healthy. Fox Sports expects a bench role. The recent starts and heavy minutes came while stars were out or resting, and I found no analyst arguing he keeps a starting job. Whether he holds a steady rotation spot over Caldwell-Pope, Walker and Edwards is also unsettled in what I found.
