De'Andre Hunter
Hunter is a low-usage wing who opens the season with an unsettled Kings role, and his starting job is contested in preseason reporting.
Role
Preseason evidence only. He started the Kings' first two preseason games and played 13 minutes against the Lakers (RotoWire via Fox Sports, 11 October). He came off the bench against the Warriors, with Keegan Murray, Ben Simmons and Precious Achiuwa starting up front (RotoWire via Fox Sports, 14 October). He sat the Trail Blazers game for rest, and the Spurs game on 17 October was his last preseason chance, but I did not find a result. Craftednba's depth chart snippet projects about 30 minutes as a starter, but I did not fetch that page, so treat it as unverified and possibly stale. Behind him at forward are Nique Clifford, Alex Karaban and Daeqwon Plowden (A Royal Pain). I found no usage rate or confirmed regular-season starting five. Last season he played 3 games and 222 minutes by our data, which is too little to project from.
He is the healthy, experienced two-way forward on a rebuilding roster. The Kings' GM said he was healthy for camp. Early reporting had him positioned to open the season as the starting small forward, and his floor spacing and perimeter defense fill a real need. Some outlets call him underrated.
The Kings are rebuilding and want minutes for Clifford, Karaban and Plowden, so his role could shrink quickly even if he plays well. He has barely played for Sacramento after the retinal detachment surgery. His contract expires at season's end, so a trade is plausible, and one report has the Lakers eyeing him as a theoretical fit. That report said there was no indication they were actively pursuing him. He was benched for the Warriors game and had a quiet 3-point night against the Lakers.
Where analysts split
Whether Hunter holds the starting forward spot or loses it to Precious Achiuwa and the younger wings. Early preseason reports had him starting, then he moved to the bench. Yahoo's roundup framed Hunter against Achiuwa for the fifth starter spot, and I did not find a settled answer.
