Jaime Jaquez Jr.

Consensus #168 · PF67 · tier 6Week 3: 4 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Jaquez is a regular starter and one of the main offensive options on a Bucks team that is 1-4 (as of the Oct 31 game preview). His minutes have varied from game to game, but his shot volume has stayed steady.

Role

Through five games he was second on the team in minutes behind Tyler Herro, averaging 29.2 to Herro's 30.8 (Behind the Buck Pass, about 3 days ago). Game logs show 31, 35, 27, 25 and 27 minutes, then 23 against Cleveland on Oct 31 (NBA.com game log, Brew Hoop grades). He started the preseason games I found. Rotowire expects a sizable role alongside Herro (CBS Sports, Oct 29). He attempted 12, 11, 13, 13 and 13 shots in his first five games (Tony's Picks, Oct 31). Ryan Rollins and Herro led the starters in preseason usage, with Jaquez third, which points to secondary playmaking (NBC Sports). Competition for the work includes Kyle Kuzma, Kel'el Ware and rookies Nate Ament and Brayden Burries, who played in the Oct 31 game. I did not read a current starting-five page or a back-to-back rest policy, so neither is confirmed.

The case for

He has started to produce in the larger role. Through five games he averaged 17.8 points and 7.2 rebounds on 53.3% shooting and 42.1% from three (Behind the Buck Pass). He scored at least 19 points in four of those five games (Rotowire via CBS). Fox Sports calls him locked into a substantial role, and an SI Bucks site argued that more minutes and usage could build a Most Improved Player case. The shot volume held even when his minutes fell to about 25 to 27 (Tony's Picks).

The case against

The sample is five to six games on a losing team, and the efficiency is well above what he has shown before, so it may fall back. His minutes slid from 35 to 23 over the stretch, and the Bucks lost Oct 31 with him at -15 and a C grade from Brew Hoop. The rookies and Ware are getting real minutes, which could cut into his. The same SI piece named his jump shot as the biggest question.

Where analysts split

The question is whether Jaquez keeps 30-plus minutes as a lead option or settles into the 25 to 27 minute range seen in the last three games. Preseason coverage asked whether Milwaukee would start him. Early-season writers treat him as an established starter, while his minutes since the Oct 23 game have trended down. The other open question is whether his early shooting efficiency holds.
