Jamal Murray

Consensus #7 · PG5 · tier 4Week 3: 3 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Murray is Denver's lead perimeter scorer and starting point guard, and the early-season evidence is that he is playing heavy minutes at high usage next to Nikola Jokic.

Role

He has started all 5 of Denver's games, per Basketball Reference's page. His minutes in those games were 37, 43 (an overtime game), 36, 38 and 37, per the NBA.com game log checked 2 November. That averages about 38 minutes. He leads the team at 25.8 points per game per ESPN's team page, and his shot attempts ranged from 11 to 25 per game. The 25 came in overtime. His assists were 3 to 8 per game. Jokic is the main playmaking partner. I did not find a published rotation or minutes tracker naming a primary backup or a rest plan for back-to-backs. He played Oct 22 and Oct 24, then Oct 26 and Oct 28, and Oct 30 in the next window, and he logged 36 to 43 minutes each time, so no rest has shown up so far. The wire note that he missed a preseason opener for personal reasons has not carried into the regular season.

The case for

He is coming off a 2025-26 All-Star and All-NBA Third Team season, per Wikipedia and FTN Fantasy. He has opened this season with 42 points in an overtime win over New Orleans and 39 points in Phoenix, where he made 7 of 9 threes and 12 of 15 free throws. He is averaging about 38 minutes as the first option beside Jokic, and Basketball Reference's per-36 projection shows 24.1 points and 6.8 assists.

The case against

The first five games were volatile. He shot 2 of 11 with 6 turnovers in the opener at Oklahoma City. His overall field goal rate is only 38.9 percent per ESPN's October line, and his scoring has leaned on hot three-point and free-throw nights. His minutes are inflated by an overtime game, and a heavy load at age 29 raises the risk of rest or injury. FTN Fantasy mentioned a minor left ankle issue earlier in the preseason, but that note is undated and has not cost him games. He missed the April 2026 finale and a game before it with a shoulder impingement, per Rotowire via CBS Sports.

Where analysts split

Broad agreement on his role. I found no analyst piece arguing about it, only stat logs and news blurbs. The open question is whether the early 38-minute load and the scoring spikes last, or whether Denver manages his minutes later. I found no reporting on that.

Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
