Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
Gilgeous-Alexander is the Thunder's offensive engine and a healthy, every-night starter for now. Injuries to three other starters mean he carries more of the load, and analysts disagree on whether his efficiency survives that.
Role
He has started OKC's six games this season. His October averages were 26.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 32.7 minutes, on 46.5% shooting (ESPN game log, checked Nov 2). His minutes ranged from 28 to 36 across those six games, and he did not sit in any of them. The wire note about resting him is from a preseason game and does not signal a regular-season rest plan. Around him, Jalen Williams (fractured fibula, dislocated ankle) and Cason Wallace (shoulder) are out for most of the season. Chet Holmgren (patellar tendon) has an 8-to-10-week timeline, and rookie Aday Mara is expected to take on a bigger role (CBS Sports, Yahoo, SI, within the last few days). I did not find a published minutes or rotation tracker, so I can't say who else is starting.
With fewer proven scorers on the floor, he should take on even more offensive responsibility. CBS Sports notes he has had a relatively slow start. Its writer says a higher level from him would put him in a third-straight-MVP conversation. He has also been a high-minutes starter in every game so far.
Yahoo's Week 2 column says the absences of Holmgren, Williams and Wallace could hurt his efficiency. Stadium Rant expects constant double teams. Early shooting is shaky: 30% from three in October, with a 4-for-17 stretch from the field across two recent games (7-19 at Dallas and 6-19 against Denver). The Thunder also lost 119-98 at Houston and 120-96 at Dallas in two of their last three games.
Where analysts split
The question is whether the depleted supporting cast raises his usage and scoring or lowers his efficiency through double teams. CBS frames the situation as an MVP opportunity, while Yahoo and Stadium Rant lean toward a hit to his efficiency. I did not find an analyst arguing about his minutes.
