Kyrie Irving
Irving is a high-usage lead guard in his first season back from a torn left ACL. He is playing well, but Dallas is managing his workload and he is on the injury report for Monday against the Kings.
Role
He is the starting guard, and Cooper Flagg is the other primary creator. His season-high is 35 minutes in the 116-111 win over Houston on Friday (ESPN, Nov 1). He played 33 minutes against the Heat. He has missed one game, the Oct 24 loss to the Spurs on the second night of a back-to-back (NBC Sports, Nov 1). Dallas used a minutes restriction early. He checked out 3:51 into the opener, and coach Dusty May kept the restriction for the Pacers game (Yahoo, Dallas Sports Journal). I did not find a current figure for a usage rate. If he sits Monday, ESPN names Walter Clayton Jr. and Marcus Sasser as the top candidates to join the starters, with a major boost to Flagg's usage. NBC Sports earlier noted Naji Marshall started when Irving sat against the Spurs.
He looks healthy and sharp. He scored 35 on Friday and said it was the first game of his last four in which he did not think about his leg (Dallas Sports Journal). May called him an artist after the preseason debut. Minutes are rising toward a full starter load, and Irving said he had no physical restrictions at media day on Sept. 25.
He is 34 and about 600 days removed from a torn ACL, and he is back on the injury report with a knee designation. NBC Sports called the report surprising given that Monday's game is not on a back-to-back. Dallas is cautious, so more rest games are plausible. He had four turnovers in a minutes-restricted game against Houston. Dallas also changed its medical staff, and his minutes are set in conversations with it.
Where analysts split
The open question is how often Dallas will rest him as an ACL-return precaution, including on non-back-to-back nights. NBC Sports finds the Monday designation surprising. ESPN expects possible extra rest after his season-high 35 minutes. I found no beat-writer reporting on a formal rest schedule.
Injury: GTD: assessed minor
Knee, ruled out for Monday vs Kings
Irving was downgraded through the day from questionable to doubtful to out for a single game; no severity or multi-game timeline is given, so this reads as a day-to-day knee issue affecting this one contest.
What would change this: His practice/game status and any further word on the knee ahead of the next game
Research confidence: reported. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
