Tyrese Maxey
Maxey is the 76ers' first offensive option through the first four games of 2026-27, and he is playing heavy minutes beside a crowded group of stars.
Role
He has played 40, 42, 36 and 34 minutes in four games, per NBA.com and ESPN game logs (checked Oct 26). He scored 28, 32, 26 and 29 points in those games. NBC Sports (Oct 22) said that if the first two games are a guide, he is the first option. The same page also said it is still Maxey's team despite the roster changes. Joel Embiid and Jaylen Brown are in the same lineup: Embiid scored 28 and Brown 27 in the win over Milwaukee. LeBron James missed that Oct 24 game, and Maxey scored 26 in it. The Yahoo recap said VJ Edgecombe also had a bigger part that night. I did not find a published starting five or minutes tracker, and I found nothing on back-to-back rest plans. His preseason minutes were 18 and 19 in the two games he played. He sat out the Knicks preseason game, which is the wire rest note you already hold.
The optimists say he is still the offensive hub. He has scored 26 or more in all four games and has shot 6 or more free throws in three of them. He also contributes on defense, with three steals and three blocks against the Knicks and three steals against Detroit. NBC noted his defense on James Harden against Cleveland. One Liberty Ballers piece (about 55 days old) said he has had a different role every season and urged readers not to bet against him adapting.
The skeptics point to the volume of talent around him. Embiid, Brown, James and Edgecombe all take shots, and Maxey will share them. His efficiency has been uneven so far: 20% from three against Detroit and 28.6% against Cleveland, on 22 to 24 shot attempts in three of the four games. A Liberty Ballers piece said he will take on yet another new role this season. The 76ers also lost to Detroit with him playing 34 minutes.
Where analysts split
Broad agreement that he is the lead guard and first option. The open question, which I did not find analysts debating directly, is how his usage holds when James, Embiid and Brown are all in the lineup. Only the LeBron-less Milwaukee game has been reported as a different setup.
Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
