John Collins

Consensus #191 · PF50 · tier 7Week 3: 3 gamesUpdated Oct 26

John Collins is the Pistons' starting power forward and a spot-up shooter and lob finisher next to Cade Cunningham, with two regular-season games of evidence so far.

Role

He started the October 20 opener against Boston, a 121-113 win, and played 25 minutes (6 points, 5 rebounds). On Friday he played 29 minutes in a 128-111 win over Miami and scored 23 (9-15 FG, 5-6 3PT) with 7 rebounds, per NBA.com and Fox Sports player-news pages. Heavy's starting-lineup piece (about 5 days old) says he took over the starting power forward spot Tobias Harris held. He signed a three-year, $51 million deal in July. RotoWire's outlook says his role isn't expected to change and that he is often not the first option on lobs or threes. A Yahoo/Last Word on Sports preseason piece says Jalen Duren, who re-signed, will eventually replace Paul Reed as the starting center. A Fox Sports note says Duren (thigh) and Ausar Thompson (undisclosed) left Friday's game injured, and I found no update on either. I did not find a minutes tracker or a usage rate, so I have no season usage figure. I did not check back-to-back rest plans.

The case for

He fits what Detroit wanted: an off-ball threat who can space the floor and finish lobs from Cunningham. Fox and ESPN's fantasy blurbs expect a prominent offensive role as a shooter and floor-stretcher, and his 23-point night shows the ceiling. One preseason write-up argues he is a better off-ball threat than Harris was in the same spot.

The case against

RotoWire says his production has plateaued, and his opening game was quiet (3-7 FG, 0-3 from three). Fox's note says he is not ball-dominant and is meant to complement Cunningham, Duren and Thompson. That caps his shot volume on a team built around other creators. Fox also notes a preseason shooting question: is he really a shooting upgrade?

Where analysts split

Broad agreement on the role: starter, complementary finisher and spacer. The only open question I found is whether his shooting holds up, since Fox raised doubts after preseason, and two games is too small a sample to answer it. I found no published split over his minutes or his starting job.
