Julius Randle
Randle is Brooklyn's veteran focal point this season: a high-minute, high-usage forward who scores and passes, with turnovers and shaky efficiency as the main drawbacks.
Role
Through six regular-season games he averages 20.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 34.0 minutes (CBS/RotoWire, 2 Nov). His season-high is 44 minutes in an overtime loss to Boston on Oct 28. He led the team in scoring, assists and minutes (38) in the opener (Yahoo). He took the Nets' first shot of the season (Yahoo). I did not read a starting lineup or depth chart, so his starting status is not confirmed. Michael Porter Jr. is the other main scorer: the pair accounted for 59 of Brooklyn's 103 points in the opener (Fox Sports/RotoWire). NetsDaily expects some minutes at center, especially if Moe Wagner or Day'Ron Sharpe misses a game. No rest or back-to-back plan has been reported in what I found.
CBS/RotoWire say the roster is full of young, developing players, which leaves room for Randle to produce. Preseason showed point-forward passing: nine assists in 23 minutes against Washington. He has scored at least 23 points in three of his first four games, and he has shot over 40 percent from three in four games as a Net.
His efficiency and ball security are poor. He shot 10-of-23 and 0-of-7 from three against Boston, and 5-of-15 against Indiana. He is averaging 4.2 turnovers per game. Brooklyn was winless until its sixth game, then lost to Detroit on Friday, so team results are weak. A 34-minute load for a 31-year-old on a losing team could also lead to minutes or rest management later. That has not been reported.
Where analysts split
The open question is how Brooklyn uses him. NetsDaily notes the Nets were 27th in post-up frequency and 19th in isolation frequency last season, and asks how far he and coach Fernández meet in the middle on those styles. Separately, it is unclear whether he plays more center. I found no named analysts directly arguing opposite sides, so this is an open question in the coverage, not a documented split.
