Keldon Johnson

Consensus #254 · PF101 · tier 6Week 3: 4 gamesUpdated Oct 26

Keldon Johnson is the Spurs' second-unit forward, and the reporting I found points to a reduced role this season, not an expanded one.

Role

He has been coming off the bench. Fox Sports' player page (indexed about 7 days ago) says last season's Sixth Man of the Year should anchor the second unit and is good for 15 to 20 minutes nightly once Tobias Harris (calf) returns. His recent box scores there show 20 minutes in a loss to Oklahoma City and 20 minutes in a preseason win over Sacramento. An SI game preview from about 1 day ago says he and Luke Kornet gave the Spurs valuable bench minutes on Friday, with Harrison Barnes and Carter Bryant as matchup-dependent wing options. I did not find a published minutes tracker or a confirmed regular-season starting five. I have no usage-rate figure. Fox says he made his first preseason start when several regulars were out, so he starts only when others are missing. The wire note says he took part in shooting drills after Friday's shootaround with a mouth issue, and he has no designation.

The case for

He won Sixth Man of the Year and is a proven second-unit scorer. Fox's page says he reached 15 points twice in three preseason games. When regulars are out he moves up, and his usage is likely to rise in those games. He also has real playoff bench production: a postseason-high 21 points in 22 minutes in a Game 5 win over Minnesota, per a Yardbarker recap from about 166 days ago.

The case against

A Yahoo Sports piece from about 37 days ago, citing SI's Matt Guzman, expects the Spurs to "chip away" at his minutes. Dylan Harper is due a much bigger role, Tobias Harris has been added, and Carter Bryant is expected to rise. Guzman also expects Barnes to lose minutes. Guzman noted Johnson struggled offensively in the playoffs. Fox expects Harris's return to limit his involvement and says he will face more competition for touches.

Where analysts split

The split is how many minutes he keeps once Harper, Harris and Bryant are all healthy. Fox's Sixth Man framing has him steady at 15 to 20 minutes. Guzman and the Yahoo piece expect a real cut from last season's bench-leading workload. I found no one arguing he returns to the starting five.
